This coming year promises to be a very eventful one for Dunbrody Archers. A European Championships in Italy, UKIFAC & the South West challenge in England, as well as a horde of other competitions across the UK, as well as here domestically.

The Scottish champs will take place in Parton in the spring and Dunbrody Archers are usually represented at these championships having had success there over recent years.

The IFAF domestic circuit is packed with events this year which will keep the club members on their toes. We have many talented underage members in the club who will all be determined to make a name for themselves throughout 2012.

The club held its AGM recently and the incoming committee for this year is as follows… Martin Moylan- Chairperson.

Clodagh Nolan- Secretary & Membership Secretary.

Helen Kavanagh -Treasurer.

Andrew Wayland- P.R.O.

Mark Daly, Alex Furlong, & Sarah Twomey make up the rest of the committee.

A word of thanks to outgoing committee members… Lynn Ellingworth, David Sinnott, & Dylan Brazil. Best wishes to the incoming committee, and thanks to all the members who turned up for the AGM. Their input and feedback is always valued at the club.

Sarah Twomey addressed those present at the end of the meeting saying that she, her husband Adrian, and their children have felt very welcomed in the club since joining in 2011, and are enjoying the archery, and the whole experience immensely, and she thanked everybody at the club for making it so. It was very nice to hear such sentiments which was dually acknowledged by Chairperson Martin and his committee. .

With around 80 members in the club we are going from strength to strength.

The club hopes to participate in this years St Patricks day parade as well as at the Duncannon Military Festival in June. We can also be seen at local festivals and shows in the region where we will be running demo days open to the public.

The competitive circuit got underway with a fun shoot in Offaly last weekend and hosted by Eric Kelly and the IAC club. Many archers from the club attended and it was an enjoyable day.

Many of our members are now shooting traditional style bows which has versified the shooting styles within our club and this is an extremely positive thing. Our members now shoot Recurve, Trad Recurve, Longbow, Flatbow, Horsebow as well as the most powerful “Compound” bows.

Approximately twenty of our members are taking part in the 2012 International Mail match tournament… They are up against archers from all across the world from such countries as Brazil, Australia, USA, Estonia, and Croatia. One round has been completed so far in January with two rounds remaining which will take place in February and March. Last year we did extremely well with class victories for Lynn Ellingworth (Listerlin). Jack O’ Donoghue (Rathnure) and John Shiel (Bunclody). We also had many other runner up medal winners throughout the categories namely Mark O Donoghue (Rathnure), Michéal Irwin (Graignamanagh), Cian Power (Ferrybank), Shaun Phillpot (New Ross), Andrew Wayland (Campile),… & Clodagh Nolan (New Ross) – 3rd.

We are currently working on our woodland course and a big thanks to all at the club who have assisted in anyway. Mark Daly, with Martin Moylan have designed the layout of our new International round course and it looks very well indeed and should be completed soon.

The next shoot is Black Dog and other shoots coming soon are Loughcrew, Warbow, Drewstown & Aos Dana. A busy few months ahead.

A YEAR FULL OF ACHIEVEMENT & MEMORIES THAT WAS 2011 What a year 2011 turned out to be, -with lots of events culminating in the long awaited UKIFAC in August. Our archers competed in the UK. We had many successses domestically and across the pond. 2011 however saw some lows in the club structure. New clubs were set up by ex Dunbrody members in the region. Club competitions took place at the hall and out at our woods, and our course was partially redesigned following Coillte tree felling.

JAN 2011 After a December of snow, 2011 commenced with our focus towards the big UKIFAC event in August as we realised we had a lot of prep work ahead. New baby time for JP & Noelle. We held the first SBG shoot of 2011 which was free as a thank you for all the support of the club to date & our winners were John, Helen, Dylan, Heather, Arron, & Shaun. Therese introduced a club suggestion box system. Michéal was crowned IAAA Junior champion.

MAR 2011 A busy month saw us compete at Carrowmore & Na Laoch Dall.- John won in Sligo while Andrew, John, Cian, Hannah, Lynn, Olivia, Jim, & Shaun, won in Waterford., We marched in the New Ross St Patricks day parade. Our Facebook page had 141 fans. Our club newsletter reached issue 260. We received news that we were shortlisted for the FBD award finals. Chris was in Estonia as IFAF Int rep.

APR 2011 The FBD awards took place at the Brandon & was attended by Andrew & Sonja where we were deemed finalists & received a framed cert. David celebrated his 40th. We held our fundraising table quiz at Corcorans. Stephen & Eileen had a bouncing baby boy. The Blue Arrows shoot was cancelled. Black Dog held its 2nd classification shoot.

Carrowmore held a shoot with no one for Dunbrody in action on this occasion. Work parties took place at Tintern. Nationwide failed to film our UKIFAC preparations due to their other topical commitments at the time. Maureen, Shaun & Brendan snr won at the Donegal SBG. The countdown was really on now for UKIFAC.

The weather and surroundings were glorious. With 150 archers taking part, Lynn, Pat, Shannon, Hannah, Evan, Colin, won their classes with other members doing well in their B & C classifications. Tintern left us all full of fond memories… (and scores of great photographs)

Blackdog held a fun filled two day event comprising of a clout and an Unmarked Animal Round shoot. Under Marks direction, we set up one side of our course again following recent tree felling. Mark improved the steps at the door of our hut. We held a surprise 50th birthday party for Helen in Corcorans. The new club website goes live at last. We held a fun Halloween night in the hall at the end of October which was enjoyable…

The successful club wood league competition came to an end. Clodagh took over as acting secretary in Lynn’s unfortunate absence. Tony made a lovely club members bow stand for hall. Our newer members were improving well.

DEC 2011 Just one shoot took place this month and it was Warbows inaugural SBG, and an enjoyable shoot it was too. Martin & Sandra had a beautiful baby girl. We ran a Christmas competition in the hall based on a league basis. The Christmas night out took place at Corcorans on Dec 3rd and was attended by many and was a fun night. The club wrapped up for the year after the final club night on Dec 22nd . With a good number of talented underage members in our midst, the future looks very bright for archery in this country.

With sincere sympathy, we remember family members of some of our club archers who passed away during 2011. we also welcome some new archers babies into the world.

With a full Calendar and the prospects of an exciting 2012, we look forward to the first competition of the New year.

As club P.R.O, i would like to thank all at Dunbrody who helped set out and prepare our revamped course for last Sunday. Mark, David, Martin, Mary, Helen, Alex, & Clodagh did a great job with the organisation on the day itself,
(hope I havn’t forgot anybody).
The weather was brilliant and the course albeit not quite as “LEISURELY” as promoted, was very interesting and
entertaining. It was great to see such large numbers attend which is extremely positive for this time of year. With our newly constructed steps at the base camp and out on the course, with the half time hot refreshments, and our improved roadway, it all made for a great day out and we finished just before dusk set in. Well done to all the new club members who did themselves proud.
Thanks to Eric for checking the course. Well done to all the winners and runners up and most importantly a huge thanks to all who turned up to compete, especially for those who had a long trip back home in the dark.
We got tremendous satisfaction in hosting this shoot as our woods recently got thinned and we hoped it would still be shootable and enjoyable. Mark succeeded in giving us a testing course.- I definately saw him smirking at people’s reactions on quite a few occasions. By the way thanks all who carried in the 3D’s afterwards.
We will look forward to welcoming all the archers again to our next shoot in 2012.
